1. What cookies are
Cookies are small text files placed on your device when you visit a website. They allow the site to function properly, remember your preferences, and help the operator understand how the site is being used.
Similar technologies — such as local storage and pixels — work in comparable ways. In this policy, "cookies" covers all of them.
2. How we use cookies
We use cookies for two purposes only:
- Essential site function — making the website work correctly, including remembering your light or dark theme preference
- Aggregate analytics — understanding how visitors use our site so we can improve it
Some of our measurement is cookieless — it stores nothing on your device at all. Section 3 says which is which.
We do not use advertising cookies. We do not use cookies to build a personal profile of you. We do not sell or share cookie data with advertising networks.

These two are the only cookies Google Analytics sets on this site, and they are the only ones listed because they are the ones we measured — loaded in a clean browser, on a first visit and again after moving between pages, and read back from the browser's own cookie store. Google Analytics stores nothing else: no local storage, no session storage.
400 days is the browser's own ceiling on how long a script-set cookie may live, so it is the real duration rather than a policy we chose. It is not the same thing as our GA4 data retention setting, which is 14 months and governs how long Google keeps the reports.
Google Analytics data is collected in aggregate and is not used by us to identify individual visitors. IP addresses are anonymised where that setting is available.
4. Controlling cookies
You can control or delete cookies at any time through your browser settings. Most browsers let you:
- View what cookies are stored and delete them individually or entirely
- Block third-party cookies
- Block cookies from specific sites
- Block all cookies
- Delete all cookies when you close your browser
Blocking essential cookies may affect how the website functions — for example, your theme preference will not be remembered.
Opting out of analytics
You can opt out of Google Analytics across all websites by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on, available from Google. You can also use your browser's "Do Not Track" setting or private browsing mode.
5. Third-party cookies
The only third party setting cookies through our website is Google, through Google Analytics. Google's handling of that data is governed by Google's own privacy policy.
When Google Analytics reports a page view it also contacts stats.g.doubleclick.net, a Google advertising domain. We measured this and are disclosing it rather than describing only the part that is comfortable: on this site that request sets no cookie and stores nothing on your device — the two cookies in section 3 are the complete list — but the request itself is made, and it is made to an advertising domain. It comes from a Google Analytics feature called Google Signals. We do not run advertising on this site, we do not use Google Analytics for remarketing, and we do not sell or share this data.
Vercel, our hosting provider, measures aggregate page views and page-speed for us through Vercel Web Analytics and Vercel Speed Insights. These are cookieless: they set no cookie, store nothing on your device, and do not identify you. Because they store nothing, there is nothing for you to clear or block through your browser's cookie settings — but they also never follow you anywhere.
If you follow a link from our website to a third-party site, that site may set its own cookies. We do not control those cookies. Check the privacy and cookie policies of any site you visit.
6. Changes to this policy
We will update this policy if we change how we use cookies. The current version is always published here with the effective date shown.
